HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR!

by Jeeah H.

First and foremost, on behalf of everyone in the Pulse of Katok (Newsletter) Club, we'd like to wish everyone, especially the Chinese community, a very Happy Lunar New Year! We will pray that everyone have a prosperous year ahead with good fortune, wealth and longetivity, receiving lots of luck in future advances especially for the upcoming AS/A Level examinations. (But we can't depend on luck wholly, can we? Study hard!) Once again, Happy CNY!

Ushering in the Spring Festival, here are a few facts you lot may find interesting. Other years might seem to drag on but the Year of the Dragon has the potential to breathe life-shaping fire, to be magical, even mythical. Keep one eye on the calendar and the other on the stars.

If you're born under this particular Chinese Zodiac...

Personality

Occupying the 5th position in the Chinese Zodiac, the Dragon is the mightiest of the signs. Dragons symbolize such character traits as dominance and ambition. Dragons prefer to live by their own rules and if left on their own, are usually successful. They’re driven, unafraid of challenges, and willing to take risks. They’re passionate in all they do and they do things in grand fashion. Unfortunately, this passion and enthusiasm can leave Dragons feeling exhausted and interestingly, unfulfilled.

While Dragons frequently help others, rarely will they ask for help. Others are attracted to Dragons, especially their colorful personalities, but deep down, Dragons prefer to be alone. Perhaps that is because they’re most successful when working alone. Their preference to be alone can come across as arrogance or conceitedness, but these qualities aren’t applicable. Dragons have tempers that can flare fast!
Health
Considering their hard-working nature, Dragons are healthy overall. They do get stressed and suffer from periodic tension/headaches, likely because they take so many risks. Dragons could benefit from incorporating mild activity into their lives. Yoga or walking would be good as these activities can work both their minds and their bodies.
Career
Dragons prefer leading to being led. Jobs that allow them to express their creativity are good choices. Some good careers include: inventor, manager, computer analyst, lawyer, engineer, architect, broker, and sales person.

Relationships
Dragons will give into love, but won’t give up their independence. Because they have quick, sometimes vengeful tempers, their partners need to be tough-skinned. Dragons enjoy others who are intriguing, and when they find the right partners, they’ll usually commit to that person for life.
Dragons and the 5 elements
Metal DragonsYears 1940 and 2000
Metal strengthens this already strong sign. Metal Dragons are more determined and they’ll fight for what they believe in. They enjoy the company of those who feel mighty enough to challenge their beliefs. They’re true leaders and usually find plenty of others willing to follow.
Water DragonsYears 1952 and 2012
Water calms the Dragon’s fire. Water Dragons are able to see things from other points of view. They don’t have the need to always be right. Their decisions, if well-researched, are usually better since they allow other’s to become involved.
Wood DragonsYears 1904 and 1964
Wood Dragons also are willing to entertain the opinions of others. Their artistic side is strong, and Wood Dragons enjoy being creative and innovative. They get along with others, but will always be the dominating force.
Fire DragonsYears 1916 and 1976
A Fire Dragon’s emotions can flare instantly. Fire Dragons put themselves on pedestals, and because they react quickly and recklessly, they sometimes make wrong decisions. Fire Dragons need to slow down and keep their tempers in check as that’s when they’re best.
Earth DragonsYears 1928 and 1988
More rooted in the ground, Earth Dragons make better decisions because they act more rationally. Earth Dragons are level-headed and able to control their behaviors. They’re more supportive of others, but they prefer being admired by others.
Compatibility
Dragons are compatible with the Monkey or Rat and incompatible with the Ox and Goat.

In relation with the other horoscopes...

Health: Listen to your body. Immediate attention will deter problems.

SAGITTARIUS Nov. 22-Dec. 21
Be careful what you wish for. Change can be a two-way street. Confusion is likely to lead you down the wrong path. Talk to a trusted friend before you make a move you cannot reverse. Patience will be your saving grace.
Love: Hot, inviting and intense. Volatile and unconventional.
Money: Less is more. Saving and budgeting are a must.
Health: Minor setbacks due to overindulgence and injury.

CAPRICORN Dec. 22-Jan. 19
Take stock of your assets and liabilities so you can add the finishing touches that will bring your situation greater stability. MIC vs. Bebatik XI

By Wadud Yussop.

A football match between MIC and Bebatik XI was conducted earlier today which started off at around 3.00PM. Both AEs and potential BEs from other schools fairly contributed their services at today's match. MIC started the match with a fast pace as they got control of it throughout the first half.

At around 15 minutes since the match started, Mizwar Mohammad proudly scored a goal for MIC with a simple tap in after an excellent run by Aisam. MIC added their second goal when Fadzil Ismail scored a bottom corner shot leaving the keeper with no chance to stop the goal.

Bebatik XI tried to open their scoring account as Qawiem shot an unpredictable shot. Fortunately for MIC, Ron Junior Phillip reacted quickly and was able to save the shot. As the whistle was about to blow to end the first half, Fadzil Ismail added his second and third goal for MIC with a similar but more powerful bottom corner shot. The first half ended with a score of 3-0.

As the second half began, Bebatik XI tried to step up their game but was stopped by MIC quickly. MIC scored once again as Wadud Yussop shot a deflected shot. Not long after that, Wadud Yussop added his second and fifth goal for MIC with a short range shot after an excellent low cross by Fadzil Ismail. Aisam scored a fantastic curl shot to make the score 6-0, making it difficult for Bebatik XI. When it was almost the end of the game, Wadud Yussop completed his hat trick thanks to Ahmad Rusydan's excellent run and succeeded.

The final score was 7-0 and the match was refereed by Munir Bakar. It was a fantastic day for both Aisam and Fadzil Ismail as they both sure made Bebatik XI's defenders work hard.

K-Gunners vs 1st & 2nd Cohort Juniors

By Abdul Wadud Hmyussop.

Last Thursday, 19th January 2012, there was a match between K-Gunners and the 1st and 2nd cohort juniors mostly from Sayy. Hassan. The purpose of the match was to make the juniors feel comfortable and for them to have a taste of what it feels like to be playing in the PTEK field.

The match was evenly competed as both teams were exchanging attacks. It was also a heated match as one of the juniors had an argument with K-Gunners's defender. Cassidy Liew opened the score sheet with a rarely headed goal, leaving the junior keeper paralyzed. The score remained at 1-0 until the end of the match's first half.

In the second half, K-Gunners became more lively as they introduced Nizam to the game. He scored a fantastic solo effort and a thunderous shot into the back of the net. Not long after the second goal, Nazim added his second and third goal for K-Gunners with a simple turnaround shot. The juniors cannot pick up where they left off in the first half as they were conceded with the fourth goal as Afif Ali from K-Gunners scored a volley. He then scored another volley and Shalfira Tamimi scored in between Afif Ali's goals, leaving a score of 6-0. Ahmad Rusydan made the juniors suffer more with a magnificent 30-40 yards long shot. As the game already seemed like it's 'game over' for the juniors, the K-Gunners players were still hungry for goals. Nasir Hassan from K-Gunners then added another 2 goals towards the end of the game.

The match ended with a final score of 9-0. This match was refereed by Aiman Hafizan.

Student Council Ice Breaking Session

By Joanne Lim.

The Student Council of PTEK held an ice breaking session for 2 days, on the 18th and 19th of January. The ice breaking session emphasized on team building and its purpose was also to make the members more comfortable and to be able to open up to one another.

On the first day, they were asked to group up into pairs and draw a portrait of their partners on envelopes. The envelopes were then pasted on the lockers at the canteen area and the public was able to post notes into any of the envelopes. Some received heartfelt letters and some, encouraging letters. On the second day, they were teamed up into groups. The groups were named after animals. There was cat, goat, chicken and also duck. They had to go on a race with pit stops where they were asked to do some tasks to get signatures from the members in charge of the pit stops. The tasks were: to instruct a member from their group to make an egg sandwich blindfolded, to transfer peanuts by sucking on them with straws from one plate to another until it reaches the last member, to sing a song to be approved by the specific member in charge of the pit stop, to pass on a ring made up of newspaper  from one member to another using their arm and not their hands, to pass on an elastic band from one member to the other using a straw and to do a spin of 10 rounds and get themselves into a confined space within 10 seconds.

The group  'cat' collected all the signatures in the shortest amount of time was announced as the winner. It was overall a fun experience for the student council members.

Here are some pictures to share.

'Rojak Cassidy' vs. 'Rojak Munir'

By Abdul Wadud Hmyussop.

Last Saturday, 14th January 2012, a 'just for fun' match was held with the purpose to strengthen the bond of friendship and more importantly, teamwork. It was a match between 'Rojak Munir' and 'Rojak Cassidy' lead by Munir Zainuddin and Cassidy Liew respectively. As curiousity might arise due to the unusual team name, both teams are made up of different football teams in PTEK.

It was a very intense match as both teams played unbelievably well which marked the scoreboard 0-0 throughout the first half.

As the second half began, players of both teams brought their A-game to protect their net and to break the deadlock. Cassidy Liew from Rojak opened the first goal with an amazing shot which built up confidence for the team to own the game. Unfortunately, it was equalised not long after by 'Rojak Munir's' very own Afif Ali. Shalfira Tamimi marked the second goal for Rojak Cassidy which was equalised again by Izwan Roslan. As confidence boosted up for both teams, neither managed to get another goal which lead to a tie with the score of 2-2.

Is the Idea of Being a 'Real' Man Threatened?

by Jeeah H.

(Note: I admit many may find the title confronting and disagree with my point of view, but please take heed that this is only subjective and from my own sociological views. I am not imposing on anyone to take this in fully. However, enjoy reading.)

In the last Sociology lesson, we came unto the subject of "masculinity in threat". Okay, I kid you not. It got me thinking, and I hope it gets the small minority of you reading this thinking as well, that really -- masculinity is in threat. In Sociology, we call this the foundation of the New Man and the dying out of the Alpha Male, in reflection to the growing symmetrical society that is no longer (fully) patriarchal. The New Man basically is a new generation of men who do not live in fear to show their feminine side such as be concerned with their looks, sensitive on the topic of love, not minding to do the housework... Well, you get the picture. Don't confuse them with homosexuals, though. Basically, they hold the believe that the barrier between men and women have diminished.

But this new concept brings a risk with it. Masculinity is in threat. With the New Man, what is the definition of being masculine then? What is the meaning of being a Man? There is no clear cut definition anymore, and if there is any particular group of people who feel more at peril due to this it would be the men themselves.

Let's face it. No matter how much feminine ways a man may not demur to adopt, they'd still want to be taken seriously as a male. Dominating, superior. Even in the slightest amount.

I'll take Korean Pop as my case study on this topic.

Although that definition is often only associated with women, expressing or showing aegyo i.e cuteness is very popular in K-Pop amongst the males as well. Male idols are also encouraged to show off aeygo in variety shows, interviews and music videos. Similar to the girls, some male idols love to show off how cute they can be. Nonetheless, there are some who cringe and refuse to act soft or cheesy.

Boy bands' most common concepts are to look edgy, powerful and masculine -- LIKE A MAN. Their stage presence is oozing with charisma via ab flashing, muscle flexing and hip thrusting moves that would make fan girls all over the world swoon. I’m talking massive athletic, sporty or strong concepts in their dance moves coupled with the dark, mysterious aura they may also have to bring. This completely contrasts to when idols show aeygo and act adorable. This may be in the form of a wink, eye smile, acts of modesty or even to simply talk softly. The men in the K-Pop industry today have to cover either two concepts which are at both ends of extremes:

HYPER MASCULINE <- MALE IDOL -> FEMININE (CUTE)

Male idols showing aeygo may often be accused of being too girly, then having their sexuality questioned and discussed by netizens. Where do we draw the line? I mean, it’s a bit unfair to judge these idols, having to go from one extreme to the next. From ripping their shirts off to sucking in their cheeks making cute peace signs, sure the change is refreshing but this leaves a lot of fans confused and feeling the pressured to act the same. Say, Boyfriend. They debuted with a fresh face, innocent and pure, cute and young -- but some may call this feminine. Not soon after, they made a comeback with a military concept; strong and powerful and disciplined. A paradox?

Seeing as fans aspire to be like them, how should they act? What’s also not helping are popular K-Pop comments such as “______ oppa is so perfect that it has raised my expectation on men and I will never find anyone as perfect as him”. This may bring confusion to the men: what is the perfect specimen; those showing off innocent aegyo or oozing with prideful masculinity?

The New Man doesn't solely come in the form of aegyo but also revived chivalry. Often in times when we watch Korean dramas we'd notice how romantic and sensitive the male leads can be. How is this feminine and threatening masculinity, you may ask. Well, traditionally, men were never the ones playing an instrumental and emotional role. It was the women. But today we see a growing number of men amongst the 3D population following in the footsteps of these dramas to please their female companion; going against their pride and not being afraid to show their inner romantic self.

Some may choose to see that embracing their feminine side as becoming more acceptable in today's society and view it positively. Hence, the coming of the age of the New Man. But how about those who do not mind being a New Man but still prioritize their masculinity?

This then brings me to the next issue. It's true that self esteem issues in the media often revolve around females, for example body image, extreme dieting, bulimia, anorexia and etc. However, young male fans also feel pressure to act or become like their favourite idol. Prejudices against females with less than perfect figures are dominant underneath society’s surface but neglect the same kind of pressure that exists for young male fans to have abs and be muscular. Also because of the growing trend for men in the K-Pop industry to sport a sophisticated look, wearing suits and ties or bows, men today may be struggling to achieve that image of which most women today may classify as ideal.

And believe me, saying the same kind of pressures exist for the majority of men is becoming more and more true.

Most songs by male idols are also more expressive; weaving stories of love and heartbreak. This goes to show that they are not afraid to express themselves in terms of emotions, something a man would traditionally hide. Also, with male idols being admired for their all-round ace attitude and skills, it is a no brainer that male fans aspire to become like them. With gentlemanly idols regarded high for their suave and gallantry and beastly idols praised for their chocolate abs and sculpted bodies (let me stress on this, REQUIRES CHALLENGE AND COMMITMENT TO ACHIEVE) it is fast becoming the norm, and raising expectations of K-Pop fans within the fandom. Men may be torn in between of being both, courteous or stringent, one completely contradicting the other. Femininity vs Masculinity. I'm not saying it'll cause psychological conflicts within oneself (though possible) but it threatens a man's idea of being a man. Which should he be? One or the other? Or a little bit of both? What if one overweights the other and it doesn't fulfill the term of being a man? What is 'being a man'? Women's increasingly higher expectations of a man does not help either.

Of course, most men may opt to choose the latter, a more 'masculine' men. Defining it with the 'perfect' body. Male idols have these sculpted-like bodies from working out hard intensely and essentially their career revolves around their image. Take 2PM for example. Since their debut until today, their image has always been to 'manly', carrying a dominating aura that gives off a dark air. And if you've noticed lately, every other K-Pop bands have followed suit. Infinite, B2ST, MBLAQ... As they are always in the public eye, they have to take care of their bodies for not only their health and well being but they also make a living out of it. Think crammed schedules with fashion shoots, advertisements, concept photos, MV recording and performances. Comparing your own body to an idol's is out of the question, these people have physical trainers, hair dressers, a dietitian and a dermatologist waiting on them to achieve their image. Abs don’t just appear over night, these Idols work hard over a long period of time to get this and it doesn’t come easy. JYP even got the boys of 2OneDay and other male trainees to undergo a military-like training before their debut!

How does this relate to masculinity in threat? Doesn't this help overcome it? NO. It is the after-effect or result of having masculinity threatened. Because the perspectives on masculinity have been overruled lately, this brings about the need to up the ante. Take it to the extremes. Strengthen the almost extinct view of being masculine.

Okay, personally, I believe it is perfectly fine to work out. Even more, it’s absolutely essential to exercise. However, if the drive stems from having a negative body image, the issue may develop over time and may be difficult to reverse.

Symptoms:
§  low self esteem, break down of relationships
§  lying about food, skipping meals or feeling uncomfortable eating with others
§  over exercising up to 2-4 hours a day
§  your body image is interfering with your education, family, social life
§  unhappiness

I'm no psychologist or psychiatrist or therapist or professional motivational speaker. But as a student, I know that having these personal problems may disrupt your life mentally, primarily the ability to study. And as AS/A Level candidates, this is extremely dangerous. So, here are some suggestions on improving your self esteem I think may help:
§  Weigh yourself on the scales less often, the little ticker won’t move down even if you stand on it after 10 minutes. Even if you check it in the morning of each day, you'll get the same disappointing results that'll only demotivate you if you don't do something about it. If your weight (mass? I'm strict with scientific concepts. Heh.) isn't to your liking, step off the scales and do some...
§  Exercise! Instead of doing lone work-outs, take up a sport that is rather social like tennis, basketball, and football that engages yourself in teams. Not only is it more fun, it'll distract you from having those constant negative thoughts that you must (excessively) do more laps to burn out those extra (non-existent) fats. I'm not saying it's wrong to work out, don't do it too zealously. Or executing a few laps on the tracks or swimming alone, like I said, not too ardently. A moderate amount is enough for each day.
§  Have more than one motivation to work out like say, for your own personal health! Or for releasing stress, etc. DO NOT MAKE LOOKING LIKE AN IDOL YOUR FIRST AND FOREMOST MOTIVATION.
§  Treat your body with respect; eat healthy, exercise healthy and be happy!

As for embracing your feminine side, there is totally nothing wrong with. It doesn't emasculate you or make you any less of a man. Be whatever that is comfortable with you. In the words of Pink, "You are fcking perfect to me."
