Book Bonanza and iCharacter Competition

by Hedwig Mui & Izzati Sufri.

If you can read this, thank a teacher.

The heading itself says it all. Reading, why do we read? Why do we need to read? What’s so important about it? Well, on Thursday, 12th April 2012, our school had a Book Bonanza and our guest of honour, a wise man told us about how reading will help us in our future lives and how it would be essential and beneficial for us.

Take some time to think about it, what if you could not read? You wouldn't even be reading this then. It would be difficult for you and people around you in your everyday lives. It would be difficult in terms of education, your social life and even looking for jobs. In the society we're living in today, not many people would want to employ someone who cannot read. So be thankful to your teachers and parents who taught you how to read.

On the same day, we had presentations by the iCharacters participants. iCharacter is a competition among students to dress up as their favorite book character. The participants were asked to dress up as their favorite book character and make a poster out of it including the character’s appearance description and why they choose this character. They were given 4 days to finish the poster which was due on the 7th April. The competition is judged based on their posters and presentation. The judges are Miss Aida and Miss Joyce.

Each participant went up stage, dressed up in their desired characters. They explained to us about their role, their reason why they chose that character and how their personality matches up with their character's personality. There were a lot of interesting information told that we never knew.

According to Tinah Marzuki, one of the contestant. “ I had spent a lot of time on icharacter actually. I did a lot of research and I reread some of the chapters of the book that I chose (Alice the Wonderland). I also had to pick a suitable costume to fit my role as the White Queen.”

“I thought the iCharacter was a way to encourage people to get involved with books. Nowadays, books have become last resorts and by this, it's a start to restoring the habit of reading once again. The presentation was a good way of showing people how well you knew the book you were talking about, and hopefully it was appreciated that we spent time to share why we love the book we presented” said Yassamin binti Ahmad Zainal.

The first place went to "The Three Musketeers", second place went to Alice in wonderland's "Queen Of Hearts" and third place went to "The Joker". The other participants were also there dressed beautifully. Here are some pictures to share.

Swimming Competition

by Frederick.

A swimming competition known as '20th Brunei Age Groups' took place at the national stadium from 12th April to 15th April, 2012. On this particular event, many strong teams of swimmers such as MICIA, MASA, SKIM, JIS, RBRC, and DSC from various schools have participated in this event. They were very confident and some looked even stronger than ever.

Among all of these swimmers, one was actually from PTEK and her name is Patricia Chong. She and her team had been to many competitions before and she was ready to face another challenge. Parents of the participants showed up at the event and were seen sitting together watching the competition take place. The race was 100m. Patricia with her opponent of the same age did the butterfly swim, rushing towards and back to the point.

After the event had ended smoothly, the results were out. All the swimmers were very nervous, eagerly wanting to know the outcome. The results were as expected, we congratulate our beautiful swimmer from DSC (Dolphin Swimming Club), Patricia Chong for winning 2 golds, one silver and one bronze and were satisfied by it. If there is another swimming competition, we sure know that Patricia will be up against it and will be hungry for even more gold medals.

Here are some pictures to share.

Brunei's Traditional Dance Workshop

By Ayeen Jafery.

Last month, there had been a Bruneian traditional dance workshop organized by the Traditional Dance Club (TDC) and Proud to Be Bruneian Club (PTBB). The workshop was taught by six experts ranging from the  Jabatan kokurikulum of Bahagian Kesenian dan Kebudayaan to primary school teachers from various schools. The two experts from the Jabatan kokurikulum are  Hjh Dayang Hj Mohammad and  Hjh Salapah. The remaining four experts are primary school teachers.

The workshop took place on the 4th, 7th, 8th and the 16th of February 2012.

From 4th - 8th February 2012, the workshop was held at the Gallery 2 from 2.15 until 4.30 pm. The club members involved were taught 6 out of 12 dances, 2 dances per day.

4th February  - Adai-adai and Dundang
7th February - Alus Jua Dendang and Aduk-aduk
8th February - Jipin Laila Sembah and Qayyum Oh Ya Qayyum

On the 16th of February, the TDC and PTBB members were split into six different groups to perfom in front of the judges at the Multi-purpose hall in the afternoon.

The performances from each group were spectacular, although there were few mistakes, it was still a best effort. After all, they were only given a week to practice before the 16th. Before the announcement of three best performing groups, Hjh Dayang Hj Mohammad commented on the respective groups. The comments were concentrated mostly on how they perform the steps. They needed to further practice the moves in order to enhance the dance.

The three best performing groups were :

1) Aduk-aduk
2) Dundang
3) Qayyum Oh Ya Qayyum

In the recent interview, Cikgu Hjh Ainun of PTBB said that this workshop is to expose these young students to the different types of traditional dances. She further explained that apart from exposure, the young generations must also learn the steps of each dance and to become teachers for the next generation so that it would be passed on to generations to come and so that they don't have to rely on the elders. These dances must always be practiced so we do not forgot our traditional cultures. Also, if we ever join any ' Kapal Belia ', we would certainly take part in dancing and show other people from different cultures, our Bruneian culture through dancing. Cikgu Hjh Ainun also advised all the youngs to try everything because this is the time we learn and get to know our Bruneian culture.

Traditional Food Festival

By Izyaan Amin.

Traditional Food Festival. In conjunction with Brunei's 28th National Day celebration in PTEK, the Cooking & Baking Club held the 'Pesta Makanan Tradisional Brunei' featuring a showcase of local cuisine and cooking demonstrations done by the students.

The traditional food display which took place at the canteen area featured a wide range of Brunei delicacies such as TAPAI, KELUPIS, WAJIT, APAM, PIPIS, KUIH RANGIN, PENYARAM and AMBUYAT. The highlight of the showcase was the cooking demo where other students were able to learn about how to make some of the traditional delicacies. This include how to wrap a Kelupis using 'nyirik' leaves, how to make the simply delicious KUIH GATAS and the ever so popular PAIS DAGING, and even a display of Ambuyat-making or as we call it, 'menumpah Ambuyat'. Besides honoring our traditon and culture, teachers and other students were able to enjoy tasting these traditional delicacies that are cooked using the traditional recipes .

In this modern world, some of the traditional food in Brunei are fading or have already been forgotten. It is up to us to keep up the good old tradition. One of the ways is to keep on asking your grandparents about the kind of food they ate when they were young.

Here are some pictures to share.

Japanese Club Second Ice Breaking Session

By Izyan Amin.

On Wednesday afternoon, 25th of January, the Japanese club held their second ice breaking session with an activity that had the members running all over PTEK. "The purpose of the activity was for the junior and senior members to get to know and interact with one another", said the president of the club, Khariul Ariff.

At the start of the activity, members divided themselves into groups of four. First they had to search for the tiny Japanese flags hidden all over the school and collect them as much as they could for every flag they found, points were awarded. One team managed to find a total of 9 flags! After finding a minimum of 5 flags, the four teams must race against each other to complete all the instructed 'missions'. One of the missions was a game held in the canteen area where one person is blindfolded and placed among some objects and the other team mates must lead the person on with their voices to retrieve the objects.

Another one of the games was a blind taste test where one person from each team had to guess the name of the drinks! There were a total of four missions and after each team had completed all the missions, the final instruction was given to them by the president which was to find the missing person. A picture of the back of the person's head was shown and another clue was given to each team to search for this person. Turns out, the missing person was none other than our very own Pulse photographer, Zulfadhli Rosli! The team who founded him was awarded major points and that puts the race to an end.

Well, there was one quite tricky game that was planned out. It was where at each check point, the person in charge had to say a certain phrase in Japanese and the participants had to actually understand them to know what it meant. Unfortunately, many ignored the phrase and just went on. The phrase were clues for the  participants in finding three certain stars, different stars with different points. It was good enough that a group managed to find one although they did not win first place but it was still a tricky one.

Here are some pictures to share.

PTEK Choir Club (Cohort 2 One Week Program)

The Choir Club members getting ready for a performance

The Pusat Tingkatan Enam Katok Choir Club has put up an amazing performance yesterday at the Cohort 2 opening ceremony as to start off the two week program. Although the Choir Club lack the members yesterday, they sang better than they usually did and the news traveled from one person to another within the college compound.

The senior members of the Choir Club managed to start off the year with a blast just by singing the National Anthem without the help of their seniors. It seems to be a good sign. There may be hope for Pusat Tingkatan Enam Katok's Choir Club to walk away with this year's trophy if they were to participate in the competition this year.

The Choir Club is still welcoming juniors from the Cohort 1 batch to sign up for the club. As what people always say, 'The More, The Merrier'. Don't feel insecure about the way you sing and feel confident.

Practice Makes Perfect.

PTEK Upper Six Sociology Students Visit the Unfortunate

by Jeeah H.

Last Wednesday, on the 10th of January, an estimate of 40 Sociology seniors from Katok Sixth Form Centre went on an educational trip to Pusat Bahagia, paying a visit to the less than fortunate children there.

Checking out the 'mock gun'
one of the children have
crafted.
There, our students were greeted with warmth as a fellow supervisor of the centre brought them on tour around their school-like hub. The students were shown into the classrooms where the gifted children learn and go about doing usual activities, similar to that of ours in school, however slightly different and perhaps, more interesting than our dull classes. (LOL! True that.)

The visually challenged children had braille classes and are even taught how to use the computer (Believe it or not, we caught one female student checking her Facebook account!) whilst the hearing impaired kids were taught how to cook, sew and D&T (Yes, D&T!). Them, together with the autistic and children with DS, were also given music and dance lessons! And you know what? They're perfect at what they do! We got the chance to taste some of the cakes they baked (Yumm!) and wonder upon the majestic kain tenunan and carpets they've embroidered as well as discover the beautiful furnitures they've crafted. Moreover, these children were also given religious education classes (in addition to the normal academic classes) and taught basic surviving skills.

We were then brought into a shop where all the items and merchandises these amazingly talented children have made were sold. There were knitted clothes, school stationaries, accessories, key chains, mobile casings, and a whole lot more. All of us purchased some knick-knacks to bring home as memories and also serve as a reminder to be thankful of what we've already got.

The Katok students then gave a big, celebrated finish to wrap up the day. They did live performances of Adele's Someone Like You and Hafiz & Adira's Ombak Rindu, amongst others, as well as prepare some fun games such as musical chairs and 'catch the tail'. In turn, those beautiful children also graced us by staging a melodious musical performance.

Cohort 1 2012 First Orientation Day

One of the groups presenting their shout out

The Pulse of Katok would first like to congratulate the Cohort 1 students to have made it through the admission test into Pusat Tingkatan Enam Katok. PTEK welcomed the juniors by conducting a few games and "ice breaking" sessions during the orientation to give them a head start and make them feel welcomed and a whole lot more comfortable with their new environment.

The first half of the orientation began on the 5th January 2012 consisting of 90 students from many various schools within the Brunei-Muara District: Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin College, Sekolah Menengah Sayyidina Hasan, Sekolah Menengah Menglait, Sekolah Tinggi Perempuan Raja Isteri, Sekolah Menengah Sayyidina Husain, Sekolah Seri Mulia Sarjana, Sekolah Menengah Chung Hwa, Sekolah Menengah Rimba, Sekolah Menengah Masin, Sekolah Menengah Jamalul Alam, St. Andrew's School and also St. George's School.

The lecturers of Pusat Tingkatan Enam Katok along with the aid of the faithful Student Council Members conducted the "Silent Action" game in which a group of students were given 10 words from the back to be passed on from one person to another under a limited time to relay the action. The person standing right in front of each group then had to figure out what the actions meant. The group with the highest number of correct answers were announced as the winners.

The next game was a Fashion Show where each group was a given a few things such as plastic bags, news papers, strings, tapes and so on. They were to use any of these things to create their desired attire under a limited amount of time. Kings and Queens were then elected from each group to present themselves wearing the attire in front of the other groups along with their confident 'cat walk' and a few poses for the camera. The game was then fairly judged by the lecturers.

The picture above shows one of the Kings from the Fashion Show

Prizes were then awarded to the winning groups: '3 Minutes To Infinity' who walked away for being the most supportive group and also for winning the 'Silent Action' game and 'Pengayuh' who walked away for winning the Fashion Show. It was also fortunate for the other groups to be given consolation prizes for their cooperation and effort in playing the games. The day ended with a cheerful trademark shout out from each group and a few words of thanks from the Student Council President, Bibi Amadah.

Debate 3.

The Ultimate Victory!
by Michael Fung.
All eyes were on the chairperson that day. It was May the 4th. “It’s hard to tell who’s going to win,” said Arafat who was sitting beside me, “I think that Sayyidina Othman put up a good fight.” However, I don’t think so. As the debate came to a close, everyone wanted to see the champions of Brunei’s 13th Interschool English Debate Competition. Our team was triumphant this time while SMSO made a great finish. To the judges, they were going to make a hard decision.
Then the winner was announced… PTEK WON! If you were present at that moment, you would see how stimulated and wild the supporters went at the time. It was practically legendary. This was only the 1st year in the new school of Katok and we have achieved something already. Every single one of us was thrilled. Huge smiles were on the debate’s team faces.
Before that happened, the team did a good preparation, the topic was “This house believes that health coverage should be the individual’s responsibility” with our team as the opposition – again! Health coverage is basically like health insurance. The Team thought it was an easier topic and did good preparations for it. They dedicated their free – sometimes not so free – time, researching and practicing. They were really well prepared for it.
After the 2nd semi-finals – the one after ours – we were quite surprised that MD was beaten by SMSO because MD was clearly a better team than the latter – according to sources. Their team – SMSO – consisted of Musa, Helmi and Hayati whom I would say, quite an interesting bunch of people.
We came to RTB like the other day, this time; there were spectators from quite a number of other schools including MD. Ours came a little late. There were clearly more people than before. Even the ministry of health came to witness! I assumed that they came to get some ideas from the younger generation.
The permanent secretary of MOH did his speech and then the debate began. It was the most interesting debate I’ve ever seen before. Musa was the 1st speaker but then stayed quiet for the rest of the debate. Helmi was LOUD and Hayati likes making hand gestures, movements and that entire sort when she talks. She was REALLY hilarious resulting to the sound of giggling coming from the audience. But no matter how terrible they did, Helmi made an outstanding finish, “You don’t go into the surgery ward so you can cut yourself up and suddenly find that there’s actually nothing wrong with you.”
Our team was great, Yusuf made a wonderful start, Julius did great and Jarrod made history. It was no wonder he had also won the “Best Speaker Award”. What these guys did was superb magic. They turned the tide on top of the opposing team.
Later that day, SMSA, the host school did a presentation. Personally, I don’t find it very entertaining – no offense.
To sum it all up, I think that the whole debate club and the English department are the real winners and deserve as much respect as the debating team. Without them, they team wouldn’t be what they are now. They have given their fullest support. That huge trophy is probably resting neatly somewhere in the school’s cabinet.

Debate 2.

Another Step to Victory!
by Michael Fung.
Yes! They did it! After the prelims, the knockers debate team were going to be against PTE Meragang’s during the semi-finals. Their topic was going to be “This house believes that the media abuses its power” with our team as the opposition! At first, the team hated it because they felt as if it was against them but then, Mr Bobby came up with a brilliant plan.
After hours of dedication and practice, the team along with its supporters left school early in the morning of april the 28th to RTB in Bandar. Our school was actually pretty psyched up about the whole thing. When we arrived, we sat in the Dewan raya where the debate was actually held. The supporters sat in an audience like manner on one side of the hall. The other side was meant for the supporters of PTE Meragang who were apparently later than we are. Once they arrived, we were told that the debate was going to start in a few moments time. We waited anticipately.
This was going to be filmed by RTB too. You could also see some of the supporters from both sides doing some filming of their own.
The teams from both sides were sited. Our team consisted of six people with Jarrod Sim BE 8, Julius Hong BE 7 and Yusof Fadli AE 24 as the main team and Azeemah AE 3, Izzati BE 7 and Arafat BE 19 as the reserves.
Our opponents consisted of three people who were Jordin Maxim, Haziqah and Angelie Chu. They were quite formidable, really.
During the debate, Jordin, 1st speaker of the proposition gave her speech. For an opening, she did quite well. Yusuf then went on giving his team’s opinion about the topic. At first, the opponents were quite fierce and aggressive but eventually showed obvious weaknesses such as inability to argue with a logical reason. They became nervous. Our team had simply obliterated them. Finally, the debate ended with Jarrod gave an incredible rebuttal of all their points.
The results came out soon and we won! It was also quite evident that PTEM was quite unhappy with the results – their team didn’t quite cheer as enthusiastic as we are.
We were then all told that PTEK was going to partake in the finals the following week. The team stayed for the photoshoot. I took the courage to talk with Jarrod and the rest of the team after the debate. After that, the team had to stay to watch the next debate that afternoon. In a way, we were already ready for the finals…

Debate Part 1

GOING THROUGH THE PRELIMINARY ROUND.

Katok Sixth Form Centre’s Debate team consists of:
The main team:
*Jarrod Sim BE 8,
*Julius Hong BE 7, and
*Yusof Fadli AE 24
The reserves:
*Azeemah AE 3,
*Izzati BE 7, and
*Arafat BE 19

On the 6th of April, the debate team left school ground at 9 a.m along with the teachers in-charge to go to Sayyidina Ali Secondary School in Kuala Belait. After going in for registration, the team stayed there until six in the evening going through a mock debate with each and every other schools’ debate team.

The debate teams were put into two groups;
group 1 consisted of debate team from PTE Meragang, SMSA B, Sekolah Menengah Arab Laki-Laki and Sekolah Menengah Sayyidina Othman whereas PTEK, Maktab Duli, Maktab Sains and SMSA A presented group
2. Our debate team’s 1st debate was against Maktab Sains. PTEK as the opposition and won that round. PTEK, again as the opposition met Maktab Duli’s debate team in their

2nd round debating the topic “This house believes that reality Tv shows should be banned.” but alas PTEK lost.
Their 3rd round of debate was against SMSA A with the topic “This house believes that gossip is acceptable.”. PTEK held the role of opposition in this round too and won but apparently the debate between PTEK and SMSA A was put to a hold and continued the next day, which was on the 7th of April.

On that day, the team left school during break time and finished off their debate against SMSA A and waited for the announcement of which schools were going to the semi-finals -from Group 1, PTE Meragang and Sekolah Sayyidina Othman and from group 2 were Maktab Duli And PTEK.

To sum up the event that day, each debate team was given the knowledge of what topic they were going to debate on during the semi-final, who were they against and the venue of where the semi-final would be held. PTEK was going to go up against PTE Meragang and were given the role to oppose to the topic “This house believes that media abuses its power.”
